Good Times at the Chapala American Legion
The American legion is easy to find. It is just a few blocks east of the Plaza in Chapala and one block west of the Christiana Park Their address is #114 Morelos St. Just look for the blue wall. It is the largest post in Mexico. It has over 400 members.
It is open seven days a week. On weekdays it is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. I am not sure of their Sunday schedule. Happy hour is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. They make delicious Margaritas, using fresh limes. All their drinks look good. I just have a thing for Margaritas.
This post, number 7, was founded in 1983. They have served the community a long time and are well organized. The women run the day-to-day activities and problems and the men take care of the special functions. There are many celebrations every month. If you go into the bar, you will find a list of all their monthly events on the counter. Something is going on almost everyday, from Spanish lessons to card games.
This month on their schedule, besides today’s monthly yard sale, there is a ceremony for the Veterans on the 11th. On the 19th there is an early bird spaghetti dinner. It is free for members. On Saturday there is the Maple Leaf club. On the 22nd is a special breakfast. On the 25th, they have a huge Thanksgiving meal at two p.m. They sell out their tickets early. I am sure I missed other things but since I am still housebound I can’t get out to pick up their schedule.
I have spent many Sunday afternoons there with friends at their Barbeques. They always have baked beans and potato salad and delicious pies. My favorite pie is their key lime. Delicious.
Their breakfasts inside the restaurant are the best in town. They make biscuits that I can’t resist. Their lunches are also very good and reasonably priced. They have a different special everyday.
They have recently brought in new plants in pots all around the yard area. They are making beautiful gardens. The inside of the restaurant has also recently been painted a beautiful golden color.
The people working there are friendly. They always remember me when I go in and make me feel welcome. There is also an excellent masseuse. All you have to do is sign up on the sheet by the bulletin board in the back. The charge is nominal. You can get lots of information from that bulletin board, houses for rent, things for sale, etc. You don't have to be a member to go there.
The American Legion is to Chapala what the Lake Chapala Society is to Ajijic. It is essential for the expats, their center of social life. I am grateful that it is there. The post commander’s name is Tom Kheenan and the Auxiliary President is Jamie Kheenan. Both of them are friendly and down to earth, willing to help out in any way then can.
