Board walks around the Lake Chapala Area

Federal, State and Municipal Governments have realized in the past 5 years that keeping the Boardwalks nice and pretty is not only good for tourism but also makes the lakeside communities very beautiful.  They have been spending more than a couple million dollars in renewing the Boardwalks of the main towns around the lake and building other Boardwalks in some of the smaller villages around Lake Chapala.

Last weekend a friend of mine from Puebla, México came to spend a few days in Ajijic and I decided to make a little tour of the North side of the Lake the first day she got here.

JOCOTEPEC

We first went to Jocotepec.  I love the fish sculptures on the Boardwalk.  It was a Friday morning so there wasn’t too many people.  There is ample parking available, you can have a soft drink and have conversation on a bench admiring the beautiful landscape.  The weather turned out to be great, I was afraid that it wouldn’t be a good day because it was kind of cloudy when we were having breakfast, but suddenly the sun came out.

SAN JUAN COSALÁ

Walking through the San Juan Cosalá Boardwalk was so relaxing.  I hadn’t been there before but a friend of mine told me I shouldn’t miss it if I was taking my friend on a tour.  Kids were playing, having fun, and a couple of families were ready to have a BBQ on the grills that were installed there.  Even a family of ducks were swimming together and a few herons resting by the boardwalk.

Walking Along Jocotopec’s New Malecon

Chapala, Ajijic and Jocotopec have all built beautiful new malecons and parks along their shorelines. Each one is unique. I like them all. Jocotopec doesn’t seem to get as many visitors as Chapala’s but it is just as beautiful.

The Jocotopec Walkway

I was there on a Sunday with some friends. We walked the malecon and had a picnic on the back of their tailgate.  I guess that could be called a tailgate party. At least it is as close as I have ever been to one. I am not a great sporting event fan. Okay, I am kind of lazy. I admit it. It was a beautiful day.  We had the place to ourselves until about one in the afternoon.

Six Corners or Seis Esquinas in Ajijic

On the way to West Ajijic is an area called Six Corners or Seis Esquinas by the locals. This is not a tourist area. It is more of a Mexican community. They have fiestas on that intersection and market days. I rarely see expats in this area. I see Mexican families and young people just hanging out.

If you want to get away from the expat community and feel more like you are in Mexico, then walk to six corners. Or jump on the local bus. It goes right through that area. It is just a few blocks from downtown Ajijic. When you see six corners converging and a huge tree with benches, you are there. Get off the bus and sit on one of the benches for a while. You will see many interesting things.

If you get hungry, there is a great little lunch café near the corner. It has delicious sandwiches or lonches starting at 17 pesos. They mostly serve Mexicans, not expats, so you are going to get home cooked, inexpensive Mexican food, such as Carne Asada and beans.

The owners are friendly. It is clean and light. I was there once when the woman was making delicious smelling pies. I asked if she was selling them and she said I had to wait for the next day. They needed to cool first. I didn’t get a chance to go back and taste a piece but that is on my To Do list. If I had a To Do list, which I don’t. I live from day to day here.
